APSRTC buses run frequently between Renigunta and Tirupati's central bus stand through the day, thinning out late at night — after roughly 10 pm, taxis and autos are the practical options, and night arrivals should expect a modest fare premium. From Tirupati onward, APSRTC's dedicated Tirumala link buses leave every few minutes from the Sapthagiri link bus stand near the railway station.

Why you might arrive at Renigunta instead of Tirupati

Renigunta Junction sits on the Chennai–Mumbai and north–south trunk routes, so it hosts many long-distance trains that either skip Tirupati or reach it only via a reversal. Practical booking implications:

• More trains, more quota: when Tirupati (TPTY) berths are gone, Renigunta (RU) often still has availability on the same or nearby trains — always search both codes.
• North- and west-bound services: several trains from Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad directions serve RU as the Tirupati-area halt.
• Timing quirk: some trains halt at RU 20–30 minutes before/after TPTY; alighting at RU can actually get you to an early Tirumala departure faster than riding into town.

Planning the onward darshan day

A sensible sequence for the most common arrival patterns:

• Early-morning train to RU + morning darshan slot: taxi straight to Tirumala (75–90 min), freshen up at your Tirumala accommodation or the free rest areas, join your slot queue. Avoid descending to town at all until after darshan.
• Midday flight + evening slot: transfer to Tirupati town, check in, visit Govindaraja Swamy or Padmavathi Temple (Tiruchanur) in the afternoon, then take the link bus or your cab up the ghat road.
• Late-night arrival: stay in Tirupati town near the railway station area; pre-book the room — walk-in options shrink after 11 pm — and head up the hill fresh in the morning.

Two cautions born of experience. First, touts at both the junction and airport sell "instant VIP darshan" packages at inflated prices; genuine darshan tickets come only through TTD channels, and anything else risks money and your day — if you want a smooth, legitimate slot matched to your arrival, use our booking support instead. Second, if you are driving up the ghat road yourself, remember both ghat roads have time regulations and the climb takes ~45 minutes from Alipiri with checkpoint stops; buffer accordingly for fixed-time sevas.

Renigunta as a base — should you stay there?

A question budget travellers increasingly ask: with hotel rates around Tirupati's station area climbing on festival weekends, is staying near Renigunta worth it? Usually not, with two exceptions. The general case against: Renigunta's lodging options are thinner and plainer, you add a 30-minute transfer each way to every temple movement, and the evening you spend near Tirupati's temples, food streets and the Sapthagiri link bus stand is genuinely useful for an early Tirumala start. The exceptions: a red-eye flight arrival with a same-morning return journey (an airport-side hotel saves a pointless double transfer), and Brahmotsavam or New Year peaks when Tirupati town genuinely sells out — on those dates a Renigunta room at a sane price beats an inflated last-minute rate in town. If you do stay near the junction, confirm the hotel can arrange a pre-dawn drop, because the first APSRTC buses start only around daybreak and street taxis are scarce before 5 am. For everyone else, the standard advice holds: sleep in Tirupati or on the hill, and treat Renigunta purely as your arrival and departure gate.
